Southwestern Wisdom
Mom sends me bits from the local papers that she thinks I'll find amusing. These two were in the latest letter and I liked them so much I thought I'd pass them along.
Cowboys and Rodeos for the Lay-Person 101:
For cowboys who enjoy the subtle thrills of whiplash, there's bareback-bronk riding. This is akin to grabbing hold of the handle of a suitcase containing 1,000 pounds of dynamite, then tossing it out of an airplane and hoping you won't let go of the handle for at least 8 seconds or you hit the desert, whichever comes first.
Bull riding is the epitome of large animals leaping about. It consists of a plaited rope with a bull on one end and a fool on the other. The object is to keep that idiot from opening the gate, which leads to mayhem and violence. If this doesn't work, the object is to stay on the bull for eight seconds without having him pick your teeth with a horn the size of a baseball bat. Bull riding is for guys who enjoy meeting pretty nurses, riding fast through city streets with sirens blaring, and being treated to legal narcotics.
